EVENT REVIEW: American Trash by Brainchild Events

Aside from founder, June Ann D'Angelo: I would just like to thank Dwight Carter for allowing us to spend the day with Brainchild Events and cover all the behind-the-scenes for American Trash. It was definitely a must-see show of the year!

What: American Trash Runway Show by Brainchild Events

When: July 12, 2014

Where: 2720 (2720 Cherokee Street)

The eclectic space of 2720 on Cherokee Street was absolutely the perfect spot to welcome the Wasteland of Fashion that is American Trash. Designers Cindy Henry of Rebel Tart and AJ Thouvenot of Andy J Designs were tasked with creating looks from non-traditional materials (such as sponsor materials like Red Bull and PBR cans) and recycle threads.

As models arrived they were checked in and started finding their way into hair and makeup in the downstairs space at the venue.

Bethany Laska from Dominic Michael Salon led an amazing team of talented hairstylists that created looks for both Rebel Tart and Andy J.

“This look is based on a hair bow accessory, but made out of hair. First, we start off with crimping the hair. It goes along with the overall theme of the show which is throwback, 90s-americana.”  - Bethany Laska, Dominic Michael Salon

Next it was upstairs to the actual runway for rehearsal...

The energy started to lift as soon as some of the biggest names in St. Louis fashion started to fill the room...

First up, AJ Thouvenot sent models down the runway in his Andy J designs...

Next up was Rebel Tart by Cindy Henry...

Last up, host and Brainchild Events founder, Dwight Carter, introduced the designers with their amazing models that donned their finale trash looks including an up-cycled wedding dress from Andy J and an elaborate set of wings made from Red Bull cans from Rebel Tart!

EVENT REVIEW: Michael Drummond Showroom Opening

by June Ann D'Angelo

What: Michael Drummond Showroom Opening

When: July 17, 2014

Where: SKIF International (2008 Marconi Avenue)

Simply said...if you were not at SKIF International on July 17, 2014, you missed an amazing night to celebrate the new home of Michael Drummond's extravagantly delicate knitwear. Immediately walking up to the space, you are hit with the mannequins draped in woven designs that are so intricate, much like how Charlotte would have made her webs. Guests, such as ALIVE Magazine's fashion editor Sarah Stallman, Project Runway-alum Laura Kathleen and Brainchild Events and Rock Uniform owner Dwight Carter, were greeted by the enormous SKIF International workspace made famous by Nina Ganci's knit sweaters from 'The Matrix'. Michael Drummond and the SKIF crew even went out of their way to cook and prepare delicious homemade snacks like vegan macaroni and cheese to dazzle the tastebuds along with the fashion senses. Once you move into the showroom, you can not help but touch and feel and stand with your bottom jaw on the floor. The careful construction and attention to detail really elevate Michael Drummond's unique design aesthetic. Outside of knitwear, Michael Drummond also brings his brilliant RTW leather harness work so that even in St. Louis you can shop one of the hottest trends at the moment! Make sure to get out to the Hill and find that amazing piece to add to your own wardrobe!!!

PHOTO SHOOT: BARE-USA Project with Brian Cattelle

Aside from founder, June Ann: Brian Cattelle and I first started talking about his project when he was casting models a few months ago. After I heard what his project was about and saw some images, I knew I HAD to be cast to represent Missouri. These are the projects that I like to model for the most...dilapidated buildings + art nudes + talented photographers =  MUST!!! I got to climb all over this building and on the pipes and in elevator shafts...it was definitely a very physical shoot where I was able to bring my trapeze and pole skills to use! Brian was an awesome photographer to work with. He would find a spot and tell me he wanted me there and then he would just let me integrate into the surroundings however I felt like. I think this approach allowed me to find very organic poses that let me interact with the gorgeous backdrop of decay. Make sure to check out his website, www.bare-usa.com, to keep up-to-date with the project! One of our interns, Keleka Mobley, helped us out with this shoot and was kind enough to share some behind the scenes pics and a bit about her experience at the shoot!

by Keleka Mobley

What: BARE USA

When: July 1-2, 2014

Where: St. Louis, MO

Who: Photographer, Brian Cattelle; Model, June Ann D'Angelo; Intern, Keleka Mobley

"BARE USA is a black and white fine art photography project that contrasts natural beauty with man made decay.  This contrast is achieved by combining nude photography with urban exploration photography.  In order to capture the great diversity of models and locations, BARE USA will have one shoot with local models in each of the 50 United States.  A book of the resulting collection will be published and available in digital form and hard cover.  Limited addition art prints will also be available."

-from www.bare-usa.com

Personally, I feel that true inspiration can only be experienced in person. Being able to explore and draw inspiration from the desolate atmosphere of an abandoned building was priceless. From the outside the building looked pretty sturdy. However, as we climbed the stairs to find specific areas the photographer wanted to shoot, I couldn't fight the feeling that I was going to fall through the floor with each step. As the shoot continued I was able to push that fear into the back of my mind and enjoy the harmony create between the colorful graffiti and the decaying structure.

As for the nude photo shoots, it was nothing new for me (except the location). I often help fellow photography majors at my college with their shoots; sometime they involve nudity. Therefore I felt comfortable with the concept. After viewing the photographer's video about the project here I was inspired by his work and determination. From a first impression I felt that he was a professional and talented artist. He scouted the area beforehand and knew exactly where he wanted to go. It made for an efficient and fun shoot.

EVENT REVIEW: Kids In America Party at Blue Bird

by Mallory Wesley

What: Kids in America Party

When: June 27, 2014, 6:00pm

Where: Blue Bird (6635 Delmar in the Loop)

With the most anticipated summer event in just a few days I’m sure you’re all wondering what to wear for your upcoming lake trip or most importantly to see the fireworks. At least for me I know that I’ve been searching for that perfect National Anthem look (a la Lana Del Ray, one of my fashion idols). Blue Bird Apparel, located at 6635 Delmar blvd in the Loop, has just the thing to help you dec out with red, white, and blue in the most fashionable way.  Friday, June 27th Blue Bird Apparel hosted their “Kids in America” party showcasing their best Independence Day dreads complete with a body bar and DJ.

One of the most popular items was their high-waisted denim cutoff shorts adorned with festive details. Ranging from a little over $40 to $60, you can pair these with one of Blue Bird's breezy embellished tees at about $20 for a cool and casual 4th of July ensemble for under $100. Or go for the owner's favorite 4th of July look with a solid red pair of denim shorts with a festive crop top.

If you’re looking for something a bit more daring, might I suggest these amazing red sequined leather leggings, or a bold firework inspired tea length dress. They even have a sheer, red and blue shimmer crop top, complete with hood; pairing perfectly with their long red, white, and blue patterned cotton pants.

Blue Bird also has a vast selection of fashions for the rest of summer with kimonos that serve as great cover-ups, an array of flower crowns to sport the festival trend, and a rainbow of crop tops for all the hot and humid days to come.

Some of my favorite items were their feminine take on the classic jersey, and the bright and comfy shorts fit for any occasion.

But don’t forget the accessories! Around the store you can find several head wraps, funky jewelry and with unique “sunnies” at only $12 a piece or 2 for $20 they are hard to pass up!

Blue Bird 6.jpg

They even have a whole rainbow of candy colored lipsticks, if you are brave enough to try this hot new runway beauty trend!

Blue Bird creates 40% of their designs and gathers the other 60% from local, underground, and independent designers. That means that shopping here you will not only get a unique look you’ll also be supporting St. Louis fashion. One of their most notable featured designers is the St. Louis brand Victorla.

So if you are shopping for a fabulous 4th of July outfit, wondering what to pack for that awaited vacation, or just looking to add some “weird” to your summer fashion go check out Blue Bird The Boutique on Delmar in the Loop and support local St. Louis fashion! I know I’ll be back soon!

P.S.: Thanks Blue Bird for helping me find my perfect National Anthem look and happy 4th of July everyone!!

                                                                                                XOXO,

                                                                                                      Mallory

COLLABORATION: Rock Uniform Blog

RockUniform2

Rock Uniform asked me to cover TRUNK by Moxi Enterprises last week! It was so much fun and I got to meet so many amazing people. On top of everything, I got to talk to the top designers in the St. Louis area about the current Spring/Summer 2014 lines. Check out the event review here!

meet Mary Margaret

Mary Margaret with 'Alice on Acid' model June Ann D'Angelo after having her makeup completed.

Today I'd love to introduce you to a very special creative team member...Mary Margaret. When our team was coming together in just a short week, I was really scrambling to come up with a makeup artist. Then, I was referred to Mary Margaret. I sent her a message and from the first mention of geminijunemoon, she was on board. I thought I hit the makeup jackpot...how did I end up with a makeup artist that already had editorial experience in NYC??? It was definitely serendipitous. Her enthusiasm for our project has been nothing short of spectacular. She created an amazingly strong makeup look for Alice on Acid that definitely brought an extra needed edge to the images. She has also jumped head first into coming up with ideas for our second editorial. Make sure to check out her bio here and see all the cool and talented people she has worked with and if you are looking for a makeup artist feel free to check out her work and drop her a line at www.facebook.com/MwMakeupDesigns. Welcome to geminijunemoon, Mary Margaret!

meet Dwight Carter

Dwight Carter styling geminijunemoon founder, June Ann D'Angelo, for a fashion event.

Today I'd like to take the time to just sit right here and tell you how I became the prince of a town called Bel Air. Just kidding! But I would like to introduce you to geminijunemoon's resident wardrobe stylist, Dwight Carter. I feel like the luckiest girl in the world to have Dwight join our team. He has worked with all the best designers in St. Louis and he's a risk taker with impeccable taste when it comes to his personal style, which I definitely appreciate. Already in the planning stages for our second editorial, I can tell him the vision and he instantly knows exactly what designers to talk to and looks to pull. Outside of being an amazing geminijunemoon team member and wardrobe stylist, I am so blessed to have Dwight in my life as a friend. He knows exactly what it is like to start a new venture and he has been nothing but supportive. I have really appreciated forming a close friendship with Dwight and look forward to an amazing working relationship as well! Make sure to check out Dwight's bio under the creative team section here.

BRAINCHILD EVENTS TAKES AMERICAN TRASH TO A NEW LEVEL IN FASHION DESIGN

ST LOUIS – 2014 American Trash, a fashion design show produced by Brainchild Events is set to walk the runway at 2720 on Cherokee Street in St. Louis, Saturday July 12th. American Trash challenges its artists to create fashion masterpieces by using non-traditional materials. Attendees can expect to see everything from toilet paper tubes to beer cans to tires recycled into wearable, eco-friendly designs.

Artist participating in American Trash are two of St. Louis’ own; Cindy Henry, Designer of Rebel Tart and A. J. Thouvenot (Andy J), Play Time clothing lines.

Cindy Henry launched Rebel Tart in September of 2010. Her new clothing line mixes sexy, saucy and fun, with just the right amount of sass. Rebel Tart uses both new and recycled fabrics to create a collection that features limited edition and one-of-a-kind items. A passionate seamstress, Henry is obsessed with mixing and matching patterns and colors to create a unique vision that lets you bring out your inner rebel.

Andy J lives by the mantra live, play, create. A contestant of ‘Project Runway’ Season 7, looks to find ironic fun in the cliché. His designs expose his love for Cindy Lauper, Rock n’ Roll and Anime. A graduate from Lindenwood University, Andy J has used his status as a reality TV star to help catapult his business but stays true to his St. Louis roots.

“Putting these unique fashion creators in one place and challenging each to bring their best non-traditional pieces, is set to make American Trash an entertaining night of design chaos,” said Dwight Carter, creator of American Trash – St. Louis and owner of Brainchild Events.

Sponsored by Pabst Blue Ribbon (PBR), Tellamore Dew and The Riverfront Times (RFT), American Trash is sure to leave a lasting impact on St. Louis’ fashion goers and trendsetters.

Doors open at 8pm and the Runway comes to life at 9pm. Advanced tickets are already on sale and available at https://americantrash.eventbrite.com. Advanced ticket costs for General Admission is $10 and VIP is $15 (includes cocktails and guaranteed seating for show). Ticket prices at the door will increase to $15 for General Admission and $20 for VIP.

THIS EVENT IS OPEN TO THE MEDIA.

EVENT REVIEW: BLUSHFest

Aside from founder, June Ann: BLUSH is one of those boutiques that is just more than a store, it's an experience that quickly turns into your own personal fashionable mecca of solace. This has been my primary source for my hippie-self in St. Louis for close to 2 years now (and I've only lived here for 3!) and serves as my direct connection to my universal goddess, Free People. Owner, Sarah King's personal aesthetic very closely parallels my own, so it is only natural that I would be attracted to such a well-branded store. Sarah is constantly making sure to get the latest and greatest in anything boho-chic from Free People to Alternative Apparel to Wildfox, but she also surprises you with pulling in beautifully structured staple pieces such as Amanda Uprichard dresses. Her taste is impeccable and BLUSH is definitely the place to go if you want to update your look with current fashion trends, no matter what your age. Sarah and her amazing style associates are more than happy to help you find your own true fashion aesthetic! Price points are flexible. Regular priced items are ~$25-$250, but Sarah is constantly marking down last week's hot inventory, so you can get now-trends at super good prices on her sale rack. I got an amazing pair of houndstooth leggings on sale there for $14!

What: BLUSHFest

When: June 19, 2014, 5:00pm - 8:00pm

Where: BLUSH Boutique, 110 N Clay Ave, Kirkwood, Missouri

Store Review

I didn’t need to be told that BLUSH Boutique was a bohemian-chic store before the event. The visuals of the store said it all. Before I entered the store I could tell from the floral logo design that the store catered to the very feminine and trendy consumer. I felt bohemian vibes from the feathers in the window displays and beautiful blue glazed planters. The theme continued inside, accompanied by live music from Randy Beck. The brick-and-mortar boutique mixed natural elements such as exposed aluminum vents, and hardwood floors, selves and crates, with classic décor like the ornate shelving and the white and blue painted checkout counter. This mix struck a nice balance between the bohemian and classic styles. BLUSH Boutique has such a strong personality and concrete aesthetic; I can tell they keep their costumers coming back season after season.

Randy Beck providing some groovy tunes for BLUSHFest!!!

Interview with BLUSH Boutique owner, Sarah King

What was the main purpose of BLUSHFest?

“The whole idea came from Lindsey, one of the girls who work for me. She’s really into festivals and everything, so the idea was for us [Blush Boutique] to do our own festival party. We were chosen by Alive Magazine for “Best Festival Wear” for 2014’s Hot List that just came out for this month. My personal style is very boho driven so naturally the aesthetics of the store lends itself to that. Especially with everything that’s on trend right now; the festival trends is so big with a lot of today’s youth. We also wanted to highlight certain brands that are more bohemian and festival attire driven.”

I heard you went out to a market in California, how was that?

BLUSHFest in full swing!!!

“Last week I was out in LA for La Market. I did a big chunk of my fall and holiday buying for the boutique.”

Were there any specific trends that you looked for?

“I focused on a lot of the bohemian trends. Printed bottoms are still really big and burnout velvets are really strong; I’d say those were the highlights.

meet our interns: Keleka Mobley - Savannah College of Art and Design

geminijunemoon is welcoming our first crop of interns for the summer of 2014.

So, when you start a company and it comes time for your first crop of interns, it can be very exciting but also be the most nerve-racking thing you have ever done. As a scientist, I have had the (sometimes) pleasure of mentoring close to 30 different types of students, whether they be medical, graduate, undergraduate or high school students. They always have different personalities, motivation and starting skill sets and it really is a gamble. An intern can waste your time or elevate your company to the next level and Keleka Mobley has already shown in a short time that she will do the latter.

Keleka comes to us from the illustrious Savannah College of Art and Design. Just out of her sophomore year, Keleka has already mastered software programs such as Adobe Illustrator and InDesign. Due to her interest in becoming a brand director and her experience, Keleka will be working with me to create the digital design that will translate the creative vision of our current editorial. I was also impressed by the fact that Keleka took it upon herself after her interview to create a trend report that researched runway looks from spring/summer 2014 that we could possibly use for our next editorial campaign. And she had this done and emailed to me the very next morning. So after seeing her impeccable research skills, she will also be writing some trend reports and covering some local fashion events for our blog, so make sure to check back for those updates! Be sure to see Keleka's bio and social media info under the intern section here...this is definitely someone we will be seeing and hearing from in the future and are so excited to have her as part of the geminijunemoon team for the summer!

meet our interns: Mallory Wesley - University of Alabama

geminijunemoon is welcoming our first crop of interns for the summer of 2014.

we are so excited to introduce Mallory Wesley to our team. At first, I must say I was hesitant after seeing University of Alabama on the resume, being that I am a LSU alumni, but fashion knows no boundaries. Mallory came in for her interview and was soft-spoken and quiet, but I can just tell there is a wild and fearless fashionista under everything. Mallory has an interest in runway show production, so she will be working backstage on STL fashion events that geminijunemoon creative team members are involved, including the upcoming American Trash show produced by our wardrobe stylist, Dwight Carter's Brainchild Events. We are so excited to have Mallory on board, so please check out her bio and social media info here under the interns section and reach out and welcome her!
