MOON BEAUTY: Exfoliation

by Kait Walker

Let’s talk - Exfoliation!

So many of my new clients lack on their exfoliation or don’t even do it at all. It is one easy to forget but a very important step in your at-home skin care regimen and can help with a number of conditions. Such as clogged pores, hyperpigmentation, aging, imbalanced oil production, blemishes and post-breakout scars.

Plain and simple, exfoliation is the removal of dead skin cells that build up on the surface of your skin. Our skin naturally collects dead, dry skin that combines with our skin’s oil, outside environmentals and bacteria. This is what gets trapped inside our pores and leads to breakouts, rough/lackluster and irritated skin. Generally speaking, a good rule of thumb is to try and exfoliate one to three times a week, depending on your skin type and condition. If you have problematic or blemish-prone skin, it’s wiser to aim for closer to three times a week, as your cells have a higher turnover rate.

It’s also important to avoid overusing exfoliants comprised of apricot pits or walnut shells, as the grains are not completely round and can cause tiny lacerations and irritate your skin.  Instead try to look for a product with round, micro beads. A couple exfoliators I like to recommend to my clients are PCA Skin’s Gentle Exfoliator, which is great for clogged pores, blemishes, an imbalance in oil production and regular maintanence, and Sante’s Microderm Exfoliating Crème, which is great for pigmentation, scarring, and fine lines/wrinkles.
